SUMMARY:Partnering for Equity: San Bernardino — Ecosystems and Equity: Centering Community in Health and Development
DESCRIPTION:Community-driven approaches to complex change — whether for health equity or inclusive economies — require an ecosystem approach to addressing systemic barriers\, leveraging opportunities\, and supporting innovation. \nAs funders\, how do we partner with community stakeholders to arrive at a shared understanding of the nuances and priority strategies? And how can we collectively support the elements of an inclusive ecosystem? \nTo engage these questions\, the Inland Empire Funders Alliance invites you to join us for the second in our Partnering for Equity San Bernardino County learning series on Ecosystems and Equity: Centering Community in Health and Development. \nEcosystems and Equity\nThis two-day program will offer an immersive co-learning experience for grantmaking staff and trustees to understand the operating conditions and real stories on the ground in disinvested communities — and explore the opportunities to partner for health and inclusive economies through increased strategic investment in regenerative alternatives. \nBy grounding our exploration of issues affecting health and economic development in the local context of the Morongo Basin and the City of San Bernardino\, these communities will serve as a window into broader countywide and regional concerns and initiatives. \nFeatured Speakers\n\nDr. Michael Sequiera\, Public Health Officer for San Bernardino County\nGeorge Lamb\, President/CEO of the Faith Advisory Council for Community Transformation (FACCT)\nCindy Schmall\, CEO of Morongo Basin Healthcare District\nSheheryar Kaaosji\, Executive Director of Warehouse Worker Resource Center\nAndrea Vidaurre\, Co-Founder of People’s Collective for Environmental Justice\nLeaders from Riverside San Bernardino County Indian Health\, Youth Action Project\, Just SB\, and numerous other direct service and power-building organizations\n\nWhat you will receive\nOver the course of this two-day overnight learning visit\, you will have the opportunity to: \n\nFoster meaningful relationships with community leaders\, cultural workers\, and experts who are working and advocating for constructive change on these topics.\nDeepen your understanding your role as a funder or public leader\, building trust and empathy to shift power relationships and activate more equitable philanthropic practices.\n\n\nLearn about your peers’ funding priorities and activities\, enabling you to better coordinate your grantmaking for deeper and broader impact.\nReduce the burden on community partners by participating in a shared learning experience alongside other funders.\n\n\n\nDay 1: Community-Centered Health Systems\nThis immersive learning tour will begin by highlighting public health approaches to improving health conditions outside the doctor’s office while also understanding the unique needs and circumstances of Native and Black communities. \nTogether we will: \n\nExplore the history and context of the rural communities of the Morongo Basin\, an often overlooked and underfunded subregion of San Bernardino County and the Inland Empire.\nLook back on San Bernardino County’s role leading the way nationally in its declaration of racism as a public health crisis and take stock of where we are now. We will hear from County leaders and the non-profit partners who championed the original resolution on how they are implementing strategies to address systemic racial inequities that shape health outcomes.\nLook ahead toward collective action rooted in community-driven approaches in the most impacted communities\, and the critical role of partnerships among community-based organizations\, the Department of Public Health\, and private philanthropy.\nAddress the importance of holistic health and wellness\, recognizing that traditional health care alone cannot address the impacts of a health care system rooted in racism and white supremacy.\nSpotlight health and racial justice\, including the unique needs and opportunities for investment in Black birth justice and Native American health services.\n\nDay 2: Igniting Change for Inclusive Economies\nJoin local leaders\, organizers\, and strategists building the power of people and institutions who are collaborating and developing innovative approaches to create more inclusive local community and economic development strategies in San Bernardino County.  We will learn about collaborative work in the region that advances a common vision: creating sustainable\, equitable and healthy communities in San Bernardino County. \n  \nThe Inland Empire has one of California’s fastest growing economies and has been referred to as a “region on the rise.” However\, recent job growth has been concentrated in lower-paying jobs such as those fueled by the warehouse and logistics industry\, which bring further harm to the health of lower-income and BIPOC communities where they are located. At the same time\, these challenges have also created opportunities to reimagine more regenerative alternatives with community leaders working to uproot extractive systems and advance collective power. \nWe will learn how: \n\nCommunity-based organizations are building power to hold warehouses and new developments accountable to better labor standards and environmental practices.\nCoalitions are fighting for a just transition uniting environmental and economic justice by advocating for community benefits agreements and promoting green jobs.\nCross-sector collaborations are fostering community and economic development that is more environmentally sustainable and generates good quality jobs accessible to the diverse residents of the Inland Empire.\n\nTogether\, we will engage with local local leaders who are collaborating and developing innovative approaches to create more inclusive local community and economic development where all residents can thrive. \nEvent Sponsors\nWe are grateful to The California Endowment for providing major funding for this learning series\, as well as to our other sponsors who have joined in support. \n \nDay Sponsor\n \nSupporting Sponsors\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Inland Empire\nSouthern California’s Inland Empire (San Bernardino and Riverside counties) comprises one of the fastest-growing population centers in the United States. Located 40 miles east of Los Angeles\, the IE is rich in diversity\, culture\, history and economic opportunity. It is also home to innovative\, resourceful\, mission-driven nonprofit organizations working in partnership to transform lives\, communities and the region as a whole. SUMMARY:Member Meeting: Partnering to Build Civic Muscle in the Inland Empire (Learning Meeting; hybrid in-person/Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:This year more than ever\, the values and voice of Inland Empire residents will be on the ballot. \nThe IE is one of the fastest growing regions in the state. And yet with relatively low voter turnout\, both new and older residents’ voices are not fully represented in the halls of power — whether locally\, in Sacramento\, or nationally. \nWhat can funders do ensure that people in the region have access to the information\, resources\, and supportive structures to make informed decisions? Join us and a dynamic panel of speakers for an honest discussion of how funders can partner with nonprofits to support civic education and engagement — even those that have not traditionally funded civic engagement. \nPanel\n\nSarah Efthymiou (General Counsel for Bolder Advocacy at Alliance for Justice): Why foundations should — and can — support nonpartisan election-related activities\nEmily Michels (Policy Director at SoCal Grantmakers): How funders can engage in systems-level change\nJan Masaoka (Former CEO\, CalNonprofits): What really works — and doesn’t — when funders undertake civic education and engagement\nBrian Thomas Romo (Public Policy and Technology Manager\, Inland Empire Community Collaborative): The IE Children’s Cabinet: mobilizing system change through local nonprofit civic engagement\n\nModerated by Susan Gomez (President/CEO of the Inland Empire Community Collaborative & Advisory Board member\, IE Funders Alliance) \nWe invite you to join us in-person for IEFA’s first member meeting of 2024 on Wednesday\, February 14th (Valentine’s Day 💘!) at 10am-12pm. This Learning Meeting will be in a hybrid format\, hosted at the IECC offices in San Bernardino and on Zoom. Our member meetings are open to all staff and board members of IEFA member institutions. \nIf you are interested in attending\, fill out the form below to RSVP for this and our other 2024 member meetings.

SUMMARY:IE Funders Alliance — 2024 Horizons: Reflecting on Success and Charting Future Impact — Annual Year-End Member Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us in person for IEFA’s Annual Year-End Member Meeting on Wednesday\, December 13th at 10am-12pm! \nThis “connecting” meeting will be hosted at the IE Community Foundation offices in Riverside and prioritize opportunities for you to strengthen relationships with your funder peers and engage in thoughtful discussion. \nAs we look towards the horizon of the coming year\, there are many exciting opportunities for us to continue bolstering our work together in the IE. We are also well aware that a number of concerning uncertainties face us that will impact the region and our institutions’ responses. \nThis final convening of the year will provide a space for honest peer-to-peer conversations with fellow funders regarding the social\, political\, and philanthropic trends we see materializing ahead of us\, and what that means for the Inland Empire\, the region’s grantmaker community\, and IEFA itself. \nYour presence and contributions at his meeting will directly inform our goals for the next year. The meeting will include a preview of IEFA’s 2024 goals\, along with a look-back on our accomplishments and learnings from 2023. \nLunch will be provided during the final portion of the meeting — we sincerely hope you will choose to stay for the food and fellowship. To make it easier for you to do so\, the programmatic portion of this meeting will end slightly earlier than usual. \nRSVP to attend: \n\n\nIf you plan to join us\, be sure to click below to add the event to your calendar.

SUMMARY:Funding the Promise: Catalyzing Systemic Change through Funder Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:The IE Funders Alliance is committed to fostering collaborative grantmaking that brings aligned organizations together to strategically channel resources and create an impact far greater than the sum of their individual parts. This innovative event will be an opportunity to learn directly from your funder peers and their community partners about cross-cutting initiatives in the region that they are already implementing — and where your additional funding can amplify impact! By turning the traditional fast pitch model on its head\, it is our hope that this “Funder Pitch” will provide a bottom-up way of catalyzing small- or large-scale collaboration among funders. \nPlease note: Due to the special nature of this event\, it will extend beyond our usual meeting schedule\, with the program running through 1:30p.m. \nThe event will include light refreshments in the morning and lunch. \nTheme/focus: Funder Pitch \nLocation: Zoom/In-Person \nIn-Person: The meeting will be held at the new IEHP Center for Learning and Innovation\, located directly behind IEHP Headquarters. Details will be provided upon registrations. \nZoom Option: If you are unable to come in person\, you are also invited to join us via Zoom. The link will be provided upon registration. \nParking: There is ample free parking; please arrive 15-30 minutes early to clear security and join us for a light breakfast before the program starts. \nOptional lunch 12 – 1pm
